- WSCF History book - Seeking and Serving the Truth
SCMA has been part of the
World Student Christian Federation (Fédération Universelle des Associations Chrétiennes d'Étudiants - Federacion Universal de Movimientos Estudiantiles Cristianos) since 1896.
The Mission and Vision Statement of the Federation is:
1) The WSCF is a global community of Student Christian Movements committed to dialogue, ecumenism, social justice and peace.
2) Our mission is to empower students in critical thinking and constructive transformation of our world by being a space for:
a) Prayer and celebration
b) Theological reflection
c) Study and analysis of social and cultural processes and
d) Solidarity and action across boundaries of culture, gender and ethnicity.
3) Through the work of the Holy Spirit, the WSCF is called to be a prophetic witness in church and society. This vision is nurtured by a radical hope for God’s Reign in history.
WSCF is a federation of approximately 90 national SCMs, and has consultative status with the United Nations through ECOSOC (Cat. II) and with UNESCO (Cat. B.)
What does this mean in practice?
Join SCM and see the world! Every year our Hong Kong office organises several study programmes that the SCMs in Asia-Pacific can send at least one person to (Regional Programmes).
In addition there are a variety of special projects that take place between national movements, including:
- Paddy Noble (SCM Auckland 2000-2002) is working as Senior Adviser to Cambodia SCM on an internship programme organised by WSCF Asia-Pacific and Frontier Internships in Mission
- Exchange of participants between Australian SCM and SCM Aotearoa National Conferences.
Every year there are study programmes organised by the Geneva office for all 105 SCMs round the world to send members to (Inter-regional Programmes).
Lastly every four years there is a General Assembly of the entire World Student Christian Federation where the plans and priorities for the following four years are laid down. This also appoints people to positions with oversight of the Federation, including at the moment:
- Michael Wallace (SCM Otago 1989-97) is the Secretary General of WSCF for the 2004-2008 quadrennium.
- Michael Perkins (SCM Canterbury-Lincoln 1997-2001, SCM Victoria 2005) is on the WSCF Executive Committee for the current quadrennium, representing the Asia-Pacific region.
